Dimitrios G. Tsoungas presented his credentials to the President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca at The Palace, in Valletta.
During the ceremony, the President of Malta and the Ambassador discussed bilateral relations.
Mr Dimitrios G. Tsoungas was born in 1956 in Thessaloniki, and graduated from “French Letters and Language School” of Aristotle’s University (1974-1978). After fulfilling his military service, he also studied Law at Aristotle’s University (1980-1983) and, in October 1983, he took exams and joined the Diplomatic Academy of the Greek Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1984.
In 1985, as Third Secretary, he joined the Inspectorate General of MFA, and assisted in inspecting a large number of Greek Diplomatic Missions around the world.
In 1988 he was posted, as Second Secretary, to the Greek Embassy in Beijing, China, having witnessed the 1989 Tiananmen Square events and, in 1991, he was promoted to First Secretary, and was appointed in the Permanent Representation of Greece to the European Union, dealing with EU-Asia, EU-Latin America, Food Aid, Development and European Parliament dossiers and presided the relevant working groups during the rotating chairmanship of Greece at the European Council (for a semester in 1994).
In November 1994, he was transferred to the MFA, where he was promoted to Counsellor and served for the following three years as Greece’s focal point for the Schengen Agreement, which prepared the country’s accession.
As from 1997, he was appointed Deputy Head of Mission at the Greek Embassies in Sofia, Bulgaria (11/1997 – 09/2001) and in Prague, Czech Republic (09/2001 – 09/2006).
In October 2006, he was posted as Deputy Head of S.E. European Countries Directorate in the MFA and, as from January 2009, he was promoted to Minister Plenipotentiary and was appointed Head of Bilateral Economic Relations with S.E. Europe, Russia and C.I.S., Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization and Adriatic – Ionian Initiative Directorate.
As from August 2013 until September 2017, he served as Ambassador of Greece to Azerbaijan, while, for the last 18 months, he headed the Greek MFA Directorate for European Integration and Economic and Monetary Policy, dealing with Brexit, Future of Europe and Multiannual Financial Framework.
Mr Dimitrios G. Tsoungas speaks fluent English, French, Italian and Romanian.
He has been decorated with the Grand Commandeur de l’ Ordre du Phoenix of the Hellenic Republic.
