President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca yesterday received a group of foreign students at San Anton Palace, who are currently in Malta on an Erasmus+ Project being coordinated by Cross Culture International Foundation.
The President stated that seventy years ago, the United Nations approved the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adding that universal means that each and every human being across the globe has the same rights we have.
President Coleiro Preca said that human trafficking is truly eroding our universal human rights, and encouraged the young people, “to continue stand up together, encouraging others, to work in synergy, to endeavour as much as you can, in each and every country that you come from, to make people more aware, as some people are completely oblivious to the fact that human trafficking exists.”
“I have confidence in our young people. We need to change the world, we need to change mentalities, we need to bring change to our communities. The world needs young activists for peace because trafficking disturbs our peace, it brings inequalities, it brings all sorts of poverty, it brings all sorts of discrimination,” she stated.
The President also appealed to the youths, for them to be courageous, and to not be deterred when somebody tries to ridicule them.
“Please thrive on each other’s courage, to be activists now, so that tomorrow we will have some confidence in the fact that there will be leaders who will have open eyes, leaders who are being pro-active in eradicating human trafficking,” the President said, whilst also reminding the students that human trafficking, inequalities and poverty are all at the heart of the United Nations’ Agenda 2030, and its seventeen Sustainable Development Goals.
