During yesterday’s ceremony of the 13th Edition of “Premio Margutta – La Via delle Arti,” organised for the first time in Malta as a collaboration between BPW Malta and BPW Italia, President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, received the special “Sezione Empowerment” award, “for the tireless works that President Coleiro Preca continues to promote and her fight to empower those who need it most.”
The President stated that this is not just a celebration in honour of these wonderful remarkable people, acknowledging them for their talents and their inputs in culture and the arts. “It is also a celebration of bringing our friendship to the fore – our friendship as women, coming from different countries, from the same region.”
Accepting the award during the ceremony organised at Verdala Palace, President Coleiro Preca said that she feels humbled at this recognition, whilst also commending the women in Malta, in Rome, and in the Euro-Mediterranean Region, who are doing a lot to empower their girls, within their homes and within their communities, who unfortunately are not always caught under the radar of the media.
The President commended BPW Malta and BPW Italy for all the work that they do.
In particular, she praised BPW Malta’s annual initiative on International Women’s Day where it brings together a large number of young girls. These meet women achievers coming from a diversity of sectors, so that they can speak to them, encourage, empower and make them determined to believe in themselves, and to feel able of reaching new heights. President Coleiro Preca added that “this is leaving a mark on our girls, which is also being shown in the diverse courses being taken up by girls within the University of Malta.”
“We need to continue strengthening our networks, not just to empower our young girls, but to make the necessary transformation, to build peace from our communities, because women are leaders in their respective communities. In this way, we will build a culture of positive peace, in our communities, in our countries, and in our Euro-Mediterranean region. This is a responsibility, which we, as women, have, to empower our girls, to become activists of today, and the leaders of tomorrow,” the President concluded.
