Yesterday, at The Palace in Valletta, President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca officially opened the exhibition of works featuring the works of Picasso and Miró, organised by the Office of the President, Fundación Mapfre and Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti.
The President said that this exhibition is a truly historical occasion for Malta, and a highlight of Valletta’s ongoing term as European Capital of Culture for 2018, adding that it has created a historical and inspiring encounter between the works of Miró and Picasso, as well as among the visitors who will be visiting the Palace to experience their art.
President Coleiro Preca stated that, as part of the ongoing ‘Picasso-Mediteranée’ project, this exhibition is also sending a strong message of connection, through the arts.
“Furthermore, it is an example of the culture diplomacy that underpins our efforts to nurture a united European identity, which transcends our differences and brings us together, to share one international language of beauty, unity and creativity”, the President said whilst adding that exhibitions such as this one are a powerful reminder that the underlying importance of culture is to strengthen friendships across borders, and to bring everyone together in celebration of our diversity.
The President affirmed that when we celebrate our diversity, we will make a sustainable investment in essential strategies for inclusion, for peace, and for solidarity, within our communities, our societies, and across our countries.
The President thanked all the staff at the Office of the President, Fundación Mapfre and Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti for making the exhibition possible, and appealed to the people of Malta and Gozo to “use this experience of cultural diplomacy to share and promote a message of respect, solidarity and peace.”
