The President of Malta welcomes the Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey Binali Yıldırım

Today, at San Anton Palace, President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca welcomed the Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey Binali Yıldırım, this being the first official visit by a Prime Minister of Turkey to Malta.

During their meeting, President Coleiro Preca and Prime Minister Yıldırım spoke about strengthening the presently excellent bilateral relations between both countries, which have now been established for 50 years.

President Coleiro Preca said that there is always scope for both countries to explore such strengthening in various sectors such as education, tourism and trade. The President of Malta praised the fact that the Prime Minister of Turkey is being accompanied by a trade delegation during this visit, and said that she looks forward to the agreements which will be signed during the course of the Prime Minister’s visit, further adding that this is yet another opportunity for both countries to collaborate. Prime Minister Yıldırım said that there are also various agreements which could be signed in the near future, as both countries explore further areas of collaboration.

The President commended Turkey for the example that it is setting through the humanitarian approach which it is adopting in order to help refugees. Prime Minister Yıldırım said that it is ‘Turkey’s responsibility for humanity’ to provide humanitarian aid to the 3,000,000 refugees who have arrived in Turkey from neighbouring countries.

Finally, the President reiterated Malta’s continued support for Turkey in its relations with the European Union.
