Dr Virdimura was the first ever woman to be awarded an official medical degree, in 1376. The President said that the “spirit of Virdimura” must be shared, by supporting and empowering all the girls and women of the Mediterranean Region, to pursue their ambitions and their aspirations.
“The contribution of all girls and women is essential, to ensure sustainable peace and inclusive prosperity, for all the countries of the region.”
President Coleiro Preca stated also that in order to ensure sustainable peace and inclusive prosperity, “we need to endeavour to effect a global transformation, to reverse the mentalities of violence and conflict.”
The President reminded those present of our duty to share a message of hope, respect, and love, adding that there is an urgent need for humanity to promote the values of universal human rights and fundamental freedoms, which should be at the core of our democracies.
“Let us acknowledge and promote, the fact that, our diverse cultures, from both shores of the Mediterranean, are a source of profound enrichment, President Coleiro Preca said, while encouraging all the relevant stakeholders, within the Euro-Mediterranean Region, “to do more, to educate communities about the benefits, which are made possible through our diversity.”
On concluding, Her Excellency said that more must be done, to empower the diverse peoples of our region, to make the right choices.
“We must make the choice for hope. We must make the choice for dignity and respect. We must make the choice to nurture the best within ourselves, and to openly and freely share it with all of humanity,” the President said.
